maschinen krieger - A/8 R/8 and SAFS Variant - step 3

I like to mix metallic pigment with thinned Mr Metal- Dark Iron because together they yield a nice luster when buffed. I use a large brush to apply it because it covers the model nice and quick.

maschinen krieger - A/8 R/8 and SAFS Variant - step 2

Start off with Army Painter Primer - Gun Metal.
If you don't know about this product, it's excellent. It's a very strong enamel primer which locks to
styrene and resin well. A coat of Army Painter Primer will feel dry within 10 minutes after application. However, for maximum results let the paint cure for 24-48 hrs (pending on the humidity).

Why do I use this primer? Since I use lacquer paint mostly, I have found other primers to "wake" when I apply my first lacquer coat- especially when my paint is very thinned. It also stands up to chipping well. Lastly, it has an extremely subtile texture to it.

Here's where to get it: http://www.thearmypainter.com/

Step 1. Prime with Army Painter Primer - Gun Metal.

Let primer cure for 24-48 hrs.

maschinen krieger - SAFS pilot, A/8 R/8 and SAFS Variant - step 1

New Peeps.

Altered NITTO SAFS pilot and NITTO/WAVE Raptor Pilot head.

The right arm gun is copied from (inspired by) Makoto (max) Wantanabe as seen in the 100SAFS book.

I’m using magnets at joints so the suit can have interchangeable left and right hands
and heads between suits and figure.

Hatch on SAFS and A8 open and shut, awkwardly.

maschinen krieger - Sea Pig With Crater Maker - Pirimed and Base Coat

I'm back to my spray primer from The Army Painter and ready to try exploring new techniques.

1. Gun Metal is the newest addition to the Army Painter colour primer collection and what I've used to kick this study off.

This primer has a nice texture to it which lends itself well to the finished product.

2. Next,  I lay down a coat of Mr Metal for more realistic chipping later. The Mr. Metal provides a nice luster when polished. The point is to build the layers up starting with a good foundation- metal finish. I prefer to use a nice large flat brush to get an even as possible coat down for this step.

maschinen kriger - Sea Pig With Crater Maker

Double fisted Sea Pig with Crater Maker bombs.
Basically, that's it. I'm now pondering a paint scheme.

Recipe for Crater Maker:
- 1/32 wheels from Harrier kit.
- Resin tube
- handle fashioned from brass rod and sprue.
- Resin grebes from Struschie.

maschinen krieger - ONE OUT OF SIX SUITS....

that I need (desire) to complete before Cocogeddon begins.

This one is almost done. I tried oil pastels to weather and create highlights. The jury is still out on how useful they are.

Camera Shy

For close to two years now I haven't shot any of my completed work.  As computer screens became "retina displays" and my Cannon point and shoot's pics resolution seemed grainier, I was less inclined to photograph my work. I opted to hold out for a new camera, reckoned I'd shoot completed work all at the same time when I got it. That be easy, right? That day has come. I have over 20 builds to catalog and I'm in over my head.

Here are pics of the first two builds out of the 20 or so I need to shoot. I'm using a Panasonic Lumix DMC - LX7. There's a learning curve with this camera and lighting that seems to constantly be changing even though I have a set up. When it comes to pictures, I'm oddly a bit of a perfectionist. Not by any particular standard, but as to what looks cool to me. I'd shoot these build 10,000 times and not be sure which picture looks the best. Photographing builds drives me insane.

This one is a bit mysterious....

Lighting is ok, but a bit bright at the back...

Lighting is good here, though I think the wood block isn't working for me....

The set up. Where the magic isn't happening....

Every Gans Needs A Maintenance Man

Many of you know Kow's SDR crew. This fellow has always been my favorite because of his quirky wall.

My interpretation using as Sensi did, gents from the Tamiya pit crew.

The kitty told me to

Moving right along, though in a different direction, I'm now building a Raccoon variant. Heavier armor and looking stance, the idea is it runs with A8/R8s and is a field conversion.
Thanks for the extra parts in other kits, Kow. ;)

Please note the extension of the hip armor using plastic card and that kitty are not included.

For that vintage SAFS look....

Thanks to Mr. Kumagai (aka P I N K T A N K) and Yokoyama san, SAFS joint upgrade sets will be available.

I have a few of PINKTANK's items.  The quality of his work is is on par with or if not better than with any big kit company - well worth the ¥ and postage.

Visit PINKTANK's site to learn how to get your hands on them

S.A.F.S. type R ラクーン

Kow Yokoyama san with Wave will be releasing the Raccoon in October- just in time for my visit to JP! Not only is this a long anticipated and updated re-release of an SF3D classic for those just wanting to build it out of the box, but it offers fans more options to create cool SAFS variations. There are many suit variant possibilities that two hands have to offer.
I'm not the only fella that thinks the pouty lipped doe eyed SAFS pilot looks a hot like Liv Tyler. I hope she makes it into production! Another bonus to the kit- the "fish" decal!

Fish Decal (^o^)
