maschinen krieger - 1/20 F-BOOT - Sanding down and building up the hull

Working on this hasn't been easy since I need to do most of the work on it out of doors because there so much dust is generated when sanding.

First step was to sand off all the details from the hull. With a hand held power sander. Yay!

I bought a bucket of Aves to resurface the hull so I can get my version  closer to Kow's.

Sanding.....

Sanding.....

So, mine is some what different from Kow's and the D3 1/35th kit which I'm also using as a reference.

And on its own I dig it and feel it's a pretty good version.

Next, more Aves and more anding! Woot Woot!

maschinen krieger - Rainbow Egg Königs Kröte - 1

This kit might as well be considered "vintage" in Ma.K years; it's from WF 2007. The KK is one of Rainbow Egg's biggest resin models. See here for information about future KK releases from Rainbow Egg.

maschinen krieger- Falke Repaint I

I met a modeler on Instagram also into Maschinen Krieger. He lives near, so I invited him over for a paint demo. He brought a 6 pack of ASAHI beer. RZJOEY is alright.

The Falke was my second build. I painted it with a Tamiya rattle cans (as seen below) and have wanted to strip and hand paint it for some time now.

So, for a subject to demo paint, I decided to use the Falke. First, I had to strip the enamel paint off it. Enter GUNZE, Mr Color Thinner for the job.

After stripping-

I then primed the model with Army Painters metallic primer. After giving a coat of Mr Color metallic, I covered the model with Mr Color Silicon Barrier. The photos below are after the first coats of lacquer paint, Copic marker pre-weathering and application of large decals.

That all for now, folks.

And I just noticed the letter E is not centered....

maschinen krieger - Prototype Melusine. Resin conversion kit by Re-Build.

AKA "Proto Mel", the kit from Rebuild works with the WAVE PKA Gustav, Ketzer, Fredrik or Konrad. It was produced for WF. I picked up a couple over the last two years from Yahoo Japan.

Messing around with Instagram filters....

I really like the photo below. It captures a time during the build process where I should have considered stopping acalling the model done. While I like what I am ending up with now finish wise, seeing this photo again, I like the point ar which the model was at so much more. Hind sight is 20/20.
After lacquer paints and oil slurry wash. I wish I stopped here.

I'm playing with filters and photo tools to exaggerate the model's details and colour to see the degree of vividness I like. Then I might try to replicate the finish the photo portrays so that the model in person appears close to it.

maschinen krieger - Resin Gradiator

Here are some pics of how I've progressed-

Metallic base coat using Mr Metal, lacquer tint paint and Copic markets for the metal discoloration effect.

After the first few coats of lacquer paint.
Also, hand painted ID number.

The lacquer upper coat pulls the lacquer burnt umber tint out (seen below). Then Copic marker for colour variation.

First oil (slurry) wash. Just a mix of burnt umber, payne's grey and ochre.

Close to done. Now decals, touch up and more weathering.

maschinen krieger - Resin Gradiator

Made a simple hinge for the my resin Gladiator's engine cover. Also, constructed a fan to fit under the cover's screen using a Wave and Nitto Gustav engine cover and fan.

maschinen krieger - Resin Gradiator

Picked this build up maybe two years ago.... clearly it needs some TLC. While I work on the Fboot, I'm surerly going to want to paint something.
After I cobble it back together, I'll prime it with Army Painters gun metal primer. No plans yet for paint scheme though.

maschinen krieger - 1/20 F-BOOT - Introduction to Project

The F-Boot is 1/20. It was produced by T.H.A.T. for Wonder Festival. I picked this fella up from Jason Eaton a few weeks ago. Thanks, Jason.
I was warned it would need much work. Mostly because the surface details are soft or not straight. If they were crisp, this T.H.A.T F-Boot version would be good enough for me to leave alone. However, since so many areas need work I'll be stripping it down to putty and sculpt a new surface. I'll replace many of the parts and panels attached with new. The work I hope will result in an F-Boot more in line with the Kow's version.

For the sake of staying motivated I hope Hexamodels doesn't announce a 1/20 F-Boot release anytime soon. :)

Now, where to start?

maschinen krieger - A/8 R/8 and SAFS Variant

Trying something different for the ID code. Instead of decals I printed out the alphabet in Avenir font in various size. On the backside of the paper, behind the decided letter I shaded the paper with a lead pencil. I cut out the letter and place it on the area I wanted it to be and then I colour in the letter with a pencil which essentially transfered the lead on the reverse side to the models surface in the letter's form. Lastly, I painted the transfer. It's a bit loose which I like.

maschinen krieger - A/8 R/8 and SAFS Variant - step 5

I've quite a few Tamiya acrylic paints. And even more lacquer paints from Gaia Notes, Mr Colour and Finisher's Paints. I use maybe about 10 to 12 colours between them all. When I started hand painting, I used Testors enamel for a shot period. I quickly moved to Tamiya Acrylics thinned with Mr Leveling which eventually made me become a lacquer junkie. For these suits I decided to go back to Tamiya acrylics. I like how they go on and though I thin them to a watery constancy, the paint doesn't seem to run all over when loosely applied.

The colour is a mix of Khaki Drab (X-51), Medium Blue (XF-18) and Light Sea Grey (XF-25) to come up with green grey and blue grey shown in the paint dish.
I applied the darker colour first on large open areas of the suit using a #6 Filbert. Where I needed to take care because of panel lines or surface details, I used my trusted #2 Woody Fit. I repeated this step a few times and then followed up with the lighter colour.

maschinen krieger - A/8 R/8 and SAFS Variant - step 4

I picked up the Evo surfacer Oxide Red initially to use as a primer, however I didn't have much success with it in that way. I use it now to "represent" a primed surface and in this case have painted it over the iron finish. I hand paint it in areas such as the reverse side of the armor plates, inside the arm wells and on the forearms as well on the suit's equipment and weapons.

There are other red oxide paints on the market, I just happen to have GAIA's lacquer to do the job.
